Hjalmar Funke joined GEDB in February 2024 and contributes to the Biosphere Finance theme, where he explores the interactions between financial institutions and Earth System processes.
With a transdisciplinary background that spans sustainability, economics, and political science, Hjalmar has worked with sustainable development issues in both the private sector and government agencies. He holds an MSc in Global Political Economy from Stockholm University, where his dissertation focused on land use practices in Ethiopia and their implications for sustainable development, and a BSc in Development Studies, with a focus on how political transitions impact environmental policies in Europe.
Passionate about integrating theoretical perspectives to develop novel pathways toward a sustainable future, Hjalmar is active in environmental initiatives. At Stockholm University he organized book circles to foster dialogue on sustainable solutions, and he is a member of an environmental youth organization.
